The Unwritten Rules of Halloween

Here are a few 'unwritten rules' of Halloween to make it safer and more enjoyable for you and your family.
If there are any additional tips left out, please feel free to mention them in the comments.

1)When to start Trick or Treating
Some cities have a certain time and day allowed to Trick or Treat.  If so, its best to look up the city website or newscasters may announce the time and day.  But generally, the hunt for candy begins when the sun starts to go down and usually lasts for about an hour and a half.

2)No porch lights, no candy
People who wish to not participate or have no candy, should have their porch lights off.  Unless there are other decorative Halloween lights and its obvious that they're participating.

3)Ring the doorbell once
Those who don't have candy, sometimes forget or don't know to leave they're porch light off.  So if you ring the doorbell once and they don't answer, its time to go next door.  When I was little and didn't know about this 'unwritten rule', I accidentally annoyed some people, even though I only rang the doorbell twice.

4)Keep a flashlight
For safety reasons it is best to keep a flashlight on you at all times while trick or treating.  Also, if your taking a big family out, a good tip is to have all the kids wear a glow stick, glow bracelet or necklace.  Some neighborhoods can get busy and its easier to spot your family with the glow sticks.

5)ALWAYS check candy BEFORE eating
Its not like the old days anymore, unfortunately, where people use to hand out candy apples without a problem.  Now, its sad to say, but there are people who harm the candy some way just to hurt others.  Its best to not eat any candy that has no wrapper or even if the wrapper is not fully closed.  Check for candy that has holes or tears in the wrapper and dispose of those candies.

6)Stay out of the streets
Although neighborhoods get full of trick or treaters, some people in there cars won't pay attention or slow down.  Its best to stay on the sidewalks to be safe.
